“Nature Said Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls. The Canal Boys Went Anyway.”

In this episode, the Canal Boys follow the Erie Canal from cramped packet boats to the roaring edge of Niagara Falls, tracing how a natural hazard became a fashionable destination. They dig into the 19th-century idea of “the sublime” – the thrill of standing close enough to danger to
feel it, but safe enough to talk about it at dinner – and follow the parade of honeymooners, promoters, and hucksters who turned that thrill into a business.

The centerpiece is the infamous 1827 “Michigan Descent,” where promoters sent a decommissioned schooner loaded with animals over the Falls as a publicity stunt, drawing
thousands of spectators in what the hosts call a preview of modern spectacle culture. From there, the episode turns to Sam Patch, the millworker- turned-celebrity daredevil whose jumps at Niagara and Rochester made him a national folk hero – right up until his fatal final leap.
Equal parts history lesson and dark comedy, this episode, the Canal Boys – Terry Morris, Paul Ryan, and Mark Schmeller – asks what the Erie Canal really moved: not just flour and freight, but audiences, reputations, and the modern appetite for watching danger from a safe distance.

The Canal Boys, three curious minds with wildly different backgrounds and a shared obsession with the strange, surprising, and hugely influential history of the Erie Canal.

Our podcast is part serious history, part spirited conversation, with plenty of obscure facts, unexpected detours, and the occasional friendly disagreement.
